Summer School in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 16th - 22nd May 2019

From 13-18 May 2019, the Faculty of Theology of the University of Ljubljana hosted an international summer school entitled Bioethics and Politics- Confrontation With Topical Issues. The main organiser of the summer school was moral theologian, Assoc. Prof. Roman Globokar. The summer school was attended by about forty students from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia and Romania. The lectures were held in English. In addition to renowned local lecturers from the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana (Roman Globokar, Tadej Strehovec, Robert Petkovšek, Božidar Voljč, Urh Grošelj, Miha Oražem, Vojko Strahovnik, Janez Ferkolj, Matjaž Celarc), the lectures were enriched by guest professors - James Keenan, Professor of Theological Ethics from Boston College, USA, and Prof. Zdravko Jovanović, from the Orthodox Faculty of Theology at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. 

The aim of the summer school was to introduce students to different bioethical areas (gender theory, freedom of speech, dignity of human life in relation to clinical ethics and the end of life, coping with the phenomenon of prolonged life expectancy, the influence of politics on the formation of individual opinion, etc.), to illuminate them from a theological, philosophical and natural science perspective, and to invite students to reflect and discuss the topics presented. The organisers of the Bioethics and Politics Summer School also organised a visit to the House of the European Union in Ljubljana, a visit to the Slovenian Parliament and a meeting with Slovenian politicians, a visit to the baroque library of the Ljubljana Seminary and an excursion to Bled. The summer school was also an opportunity for foreign students to get to know Ljubljana and its sights better and to make both study and friendship links with Slovenian students.
